How to Reduce False Alarms
Reducing user error is the best way to reduce false alarms. Users need to be aware of the ways they can reduce these errors:
KEYPADS: Make sure your keypads can be reached in a reasonable amount of time. Also keep them in a well-lit place, and accessible to flashlight beams. Program the alarm delay to meet the size and location of your alarm.
MOTION SENSORS: Many innocent looking items can set off a motion sensor: curtains, plants, pets, air flow. Make sure your detectors are free from dust and bugs. Balloons and pets will set off alarms also. If you have pets, or you get one after the installation of your alarm, be sure to have sensors that are designed for pet-owners.
EXIT CONTACTS: The magnets and contacts on your windows and doors work properly only when they fit properly. Make sure your windows and doors are not warped, or the weather stripping torn or unevenly worn. Latches and plates need to fit securely to prevent unintended movement that can set off an alarm.
UNWITTING CULPRITS: Everybody who has access to your home or business can possibly set off an alarm. This would include service personnel, babysitters, house-sitters. Make sure these people know how to disarm a false alarm, before a police officer is dispatched. The first step here would be to make sure they know where the keypad is. You might also leave instructions in any language necessary to communicate with the Central Monitoring Service.
